Greg Rutherford surprised on Strictly with piece of London 2012 track

Champion long jumper and Strictly star Greg Rutherford this week received a piece of the London 2012 track as a surprise gift by dancing partner Natalie Lowe during training for the show.

The European, World, Commonwealth and Olympic gold medallist returned to the London Stadium on Thursday to practice the Cha Cha on the brand new London Marathon Community Track, adjacent to the stadium where he won gold in 2012.

The session was filmed as part of his training VT for tonight’s show. Greg knew he was coming to the track for training, but knew nothing of the surprise gift, and was ‘blown away’ by its sentiment, remembering the magic of the London 2012 home games.

“Absolutely blown away at how amazing this is. It’s one of the greatest pieces of sporting memorabilia that I could possibly ever have. I’m going to get my parents one because this could be an amazing present for them too.”

The couple practiced their dance next to the long jump pit and each filmed interviews after the presentation.

When Greg competed at London 2012, the London Marathon Community Track wasn’t finished – instead, athletes warmed up at a track across the road from the stadium.

The new state of the art athletics facility is an important community asset, and will soon be the new home of the Newham and Essex Beagles – the athletics club that Mo Farah and Christine Ohuruogu are members of.

Proceeds from the sale of the London 2012 track will go back into maintaining and operating this facility and London Stadium.
