Stopping off on her way to the Team GB Rio homecoming parade this morning, former Olympic, World and Commonwealth 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu took part in a homecoming of her own.

The athlete returned to her former school, St Edwards Church of England School & Sixth Form College, Romford, to present a commemorative piece of the London 2012 athletics track that she raced on alongside other Olympic legends four years ago.

The London 2012 track where history was made has been removed and replaced ahead of the London 2017 IAAF World Championships and World Para-Athletics Championships next summer.

Pieces of the original London 2012 track have been made into a range of exclusive sporting memorabilia and are available to purchase from our online shop.

As well as awarding a large, decorative framed piece of the track to the school as a memento of her incredible sporting achievements and inspiration to St Edwards students, Christine was also presented with a piece of the track by students and Deputy Head, Ian Raper.

During her visit to St Edwards School, Ohuruogu said:

“I’m so happy to be here today to award my school with this beautiful piece of London 2012 track. St Edwards is a great school and it really helped me to find a love for sport. There are great facilities and really supportive and encouraging PE staff. I took part in everything, team and individual sports, before focusing on athletics in later years, so I’m delighted to be able to give something back in this iconic London 2012 memento.”

Ian Raper, Deputy Head of St Edwards School expressed his delight at receiving the track from Christine:

“We would like to thank Christine so much for returning here to present us with a gift that we will cherish forever and we hope that it will encourage many of our students to aspire to the successes of the stars of London 2012.”

David Edmonds, Chair of E20 Stadium LLP said:

“We’re really honoured to present a piece of London 2012 history to local schools and some of our greatest athletes who experienced the true magic of the home games. We hope this piece of the track will take pride in St Edwards School and inspire its students to follow in the footsteps of legends like Christine.”

The original London 2012 track has been made into a range of exclusive sporting memorabilia and is available to purchase now from the London 2012 Track store.
